About 91原创 Council
The 91原创 Council, led by the Chancellor the Hon Dr John McVeigh, is the University’s governing body. Under the Council’s powers include:
- appoint the University’s staff
- manage and control the University’s affairs and property
- manage and control the University’s finances.
The roles and responsibilities of Council, as the governing body of a large and complex organisation, are significant. Council members are drawn from diverse communities and bring together a unique mix of skills, knowledge and experience.
The 91原创 Act specifies the following categories of membership of Council:
Official members:
- Chancellor
- Vice-Chancellor
- Chair of Academic Board
Appointed members:
- 5 members appointed by the State Minister for Education.
Additional members:
- 3 additional members appointed by Council, at least one of whom must be a graduate of the University.
- Additional members cannot be current students or staff of the University.
Elected members:
- 1 academic staff member, 1 professional staff member, 1 student.

Nominations for Elected Student Member
Nominations are hereby called for one enrolled student to fill a vacancy on the 12th Council of the 91原创 for a two year period, from 7 October 2025 to 6 October 2027.
For the purposes of this election to be eligible to nominate for the Elected Student member the following criteria must be met:
- currently enrolled in a 91原创 program of study; and
- intend to remain enrolled for the full two year period 7 October 2025 – 6 October 2027; and
- will not be employed by the University on either a continuing (permanent) or fixed-term basis between 7 October 2025 – 6 October 2027.
Nominations for Elected Staff Members
Nominations are hereby called for the following categories of elected staff members to fill vacancies on the 12th Council of the 91原创 for a four-year term of office, from 7 October 2025 – 6 October 2029:
- One Member of the Academic Staff of the University, elected by and from members of the Academic Staff
- One Member of the Professional Staff of the University, elected by and from members of the Professional Staff
For the purposes of this election:
- ‘Academic Staff member’ means those employed as an Academic Employee in accordance with the provisions of the , as at 4:00pm on 25 July 2025.
- ‘Professional Staff member’ means those employed as a Professional Employee in accordance with the provisions of the , as at 4:00pm on 25 July 2025.
Details about Council Membership
Council normally meets six times per calendar year, with each meeting being up to four hours duration. Council has four standing committees each of which normally meets six times per year, with meetings being up to three hours duration. Elected staff members will be members of Council and may also be required to be members of one or more standing committees of Council, which will involve attendance at additional meetings. All meetings are held in person at one of 91原创’s campuses or centres, and via Zoom.
As with all members of Council, elected members are required to:
- attend and contribute to all meetings of Council and committees of Council on which they serve
- inform themselves about issues affecting the higher education sector and governance of the University
- read and understand materials distributed to Council, actively seeking clarification and additional information as required
- where necessary, maintain the confidentiality of information provided to Council and deliberations undertaken by the Council
- support and respect the majority decisions of Council regardless of personal views
- represent the University and the Council in external and internal forums, including attending ceremonial functions where possible.
Elected staff members will have an amount of $13,887.30 (2025 rate) made available to them, each year, to be used for research assistance, work relief, professional development, etc, as agreed with their supervisor and approved by the University Secretary.
The Elected Student Member is paid under the . The current remuneration for the elected student on Council is $11,109 per annum (inclusive of 11.5% superannuation).
How to Nominate
To nominate, please:
- Complete the Elected Academic Staff Nomination Form or the Elected Professional Staff Nomination Form or the Elected Student Member Nomination Form.
- Email the completed the Nomination Form to governance.elections@unisq.edu.au by 4:00pm (AEST) on Friday 25 July 2025.
Once nominations close, elections will occur for those categories where the number of nominations received exceeds the number of positions.
